#TBT That Time Dem. Sen. McCaskill Lied About Meeting With A Russian Gov. Agent

- July 13, 2017

NOT ONLY DID SHE MEET WITH THE RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR, MCCASKILL PAID BIG BUCKS TO DINE AT HIS HOUSE

In March, Senator McCaskill Claimed She Never Met Or Spoke With Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak

On March 2, 2017, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) Tweeted "I've Been On The Armed Services Com For 10 Years. No Call Or Meeting W/Russian Ambassador. Ever." "I've been on the Armed Services Com for 10 years. No call or meeting w/Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of Foreign Rel Com." (Senator Claire McCaskill, Twitter Feed , 3/2/17)

However, McCaskill Has Actually Met With The Russian Ambassador And Paid To Dine At His House

Shortly After Sen. McCaskill's Tweet, It Was Discovered She Had In Fact Met With The Russian Ambassador And Spoke With Him On The Phone On A Separate Occasion. "After her March tweet, it was revealed that McCaskill tweeted twice about interacting with the Russian ambassador: once in 2013 about a meeting pertaining to US adoptions and again in 2015 about a phone call with the ambassador about the Iran nuclear deal." (Manu Raju, "Despite Tweet, McCaskill Attended Reception At Russian Ambassador's Home," CNN , 6/26/17)

A Fact Check Of McCaskill's Tweet By PolitiFact Found Her Assertion To Be False. "McCaskill's own tweets show that she has had an in-person group meeting, as well as a phone call, with the Russian ambassador in the past four years. A McCaskill spokesperson contrasted these interactions with the private one-on-one meeting Sessions had in his office with the ambassador. However, though the context for McCaskill's and Sessions' interactions with Kislyak may be very different, she goes too far in saying she didn't 'ever' have that meeting or phone call. We rate McCaskill's claim False." (Lauren Carroll, "Claire McCaskill Says She Never Met With Russian Ambassador, Past Tweets Say Otherwise," PolitiFact , 3/2/17)

Months After Her Now-Debunked Tweet, It Was Reported That Sen. McCaskill Attended A Black-Tie Reception At Ambassador Kislyak's Washington House In November 2015 . "And now, CNN has learned, McCaskill spent an evening at a black-tie reception at the ambassador's Washington residence in November 2015." (Manu Raju, "Despite Tweet, McCaskill Attended Reception At Russian Ambassador's Home," CNN , 6/26/17)

  • In The Past, McCaskill Has Quoted A Democratic Colleague Who Said He "Would Never Dream Of Meeting With The Russian Ambassador Without The State Department There." "McCaskill has quoted a Democratic colleague on the Senate Armed Services Committee who said he 'would never dream of meeting with the Russian ambassador without the State Department there because we know they spy on us.'" (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)

To Make Matters Worse, McCaskill Used Funds From A Personal Foundation To Gain Entrance To The Reception

Senator McCaskill Used Funds From A Personal Foundation To Pay To Attend A Dinner At The Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak's Washington D.C. Home . "Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill (Mo.) used a personal foundation to pay for a dinner she attended at Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak's Washington, D.C., residence." (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)

McCaskill Made The Payment To The American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation Through The Shepard Family Foundation. " The payment to Kislyak's foundation was not made directly by McCaskill-it was made through a foundation, the Shepard Family Foundation, that she set up with her husband Joseph Shepard in 2013 but failed to disclose in filings to the Senate ethics committee until three weeks ago." (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)

  • The Shepard Family Foundation Is Owned And Run By Senator McCaskill, Her Husband Joseph Shepard, And Family Members. "The Shepard Family Foundation is totally funded by McCaskill, D-Mo., and her husband, Joseph Shepard, and family members, the senator said." (Chuck Raasch, "McCaskill Details Donations Of Foundation She Has Established With Her Husband," The St. Louis-Post Dispatch , 6/27/17)

Through The Shepard Family Foundation, McCaskill Donated $873 Dollars To The American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation. "McCaskill's attendance at the dinner was accompanied by an $873 payment to the American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation, where Kislyak serves on the board of directors as honorary chairman." (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)

  • Ambassador Kislyak Is The Honorary Chairman Of The American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation.

The $873 Contribution Was Reduced From The Original Total Of $1,000 To Pay For The Meals Of McCaskill And Her Husband At The Dinner. "The $873 contribution was part of an intended $1,000 donation on behalf of former Missouri Rep. James Symington, and was reduced when McCaskill and her husband paid for their own meals at a November 2015 dinner at the Russian embassy because of the foundation's rules, she said." (Chuck Raasch, "McCaskill Details Donations Of Foundation She Has Established With Her Husband," The St. Louis-Post Dispatch , 6/27/17)

After Discovering She Lied About The Meeting, It Was Discovered She Also Failed To Disclose Her Ties To The Organization That Paid For Her Ticket To Dine At The Ambassador's House

Senator McCaskill Did Not Disclose Her Role In The Shepard Family Foundation Until Earlier This Month. "The senator had failed to disclose her role in the foundation until earlier this month." (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)

Senator McCaskill Failed To Disclose Her Role In The Family's Three Year-Old Family Foundation To The Senate Ethics Committee Until Three Weeks Ago.

McCaskill's Amended Disclosures Covering 2014, 2015, And 2016 Regarding Her Role In The Foundation Were Reportedly An Attempt To "Distance Herself From Investments In An Opioid Manufacturer ." "The sudden disclosure of McCaskill's role in the foundation-which had to be inserted into disclosures covering 2014, 2015, and 2016 through amendments on June 6-came as part of an attempt to distance herself from investments in an opioid manufacturer." (Brent Scher, "Claire McCaskill Used Undisclosed Foundation To Pay For Dinner At Russian Ambassador's House," The Washington Free Beacon , 6/28/17)
